Six months are spent on rotations with the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery during the intern year. This time includes inpatient and outpatient Otolaryngology experience as well as exposure to Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Audiology, Speech Language Pathology, Pediatric Sleep Clinic, Multidisciplinary Craniofacial Team, and Pediatric Allergy/Immunology.

The remainder of the year is comprised of one month rotations among the various core surgical rotations including those required by the ACGME for Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery training.

PGY-2 through PGY-5

Rotations on the various services listed below comprise the remainder of the training dedicated exclusively to Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. There is some limited variability in the rotation schedule to accommodate for fluctuations in class size.

Regional One Health (Trauma/Reconstructive Surgery)

There are two services at Regional One Health:

The general ENT service encompasses all aspects of the specialty. The junior resident has a high degree of autonomy managing this service under the direction of Drs. Francisco Vieira and Scott Chaiet. Also, the Baptist/Med chief resident is available to assist with clinic patients or inpatient consults if needed and provides direction in the OR with more advanced cases.

The second service at the Regional One Health is the facial trauma service, which is run by the PGY-4 resident. The junior resident on the general service also has an opportunity to participate in the reconstructive cases with Dr. Langsdon and the PGY-4 resident. In addition, the PGY-4 resident also spends an equal amount of time with Dr. Langsdon in his private clinic focusing on cosmetic facial plastic surgery, which provides an exposure to the full spectrum of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery unrivaled at most institutions.

VA Medical Center

This service consists of 2 residents, providing a great overall experience for the junior and a high level of surgical and clinical autonomy to the senior resident. The PGY-3 resident on the research rotation also assists with some of the outpatient clinic responsibilities.

The VA service covers all aspects of Otolaryngology with a focus on Head & Neck Oncology, Rhinology, and Facial Plastic & Reconstuctive Surgery. Dr. Chris Vanison is the core faculty member at the VA. Drs. Chris Hall, Blake Williams, and Terry Templeton also provide assistance in both the clinic and the OR.

Methodist University Hospital (Adult)

The Methodist service is a general ENT service with a focus on Head & Neck Oncology consisting of PGY2, 4, & 5's.

The remainder of the Methodist team is centered in the hospital, managing service and private patients as well as consults.

The core academic faculty operating at Methodist include Dr. Boyd Gillespie, Dr. Chris Vanison, Dr. Courtney Shires, Dr. Bruce MacDonald, Dr. Chris Hall, and Dr. Blake Williams.

Le Bonheur / St. Jude (Pediatric)

This is a PGY-2 and PGY-3 rotation under the direction of Dr. Jerome Thompson. Additional faculty members include Dr. Tony Sheyn, Dr. Jennifer McLevy, and Dr. Rose Mary Stocks. One day each week Dr. Bruce MacDonald operates at Le Bonheur, and the Le Bonheur ENT resident has the opportunity to work with Dr. MacDonald and the Otology resident on pediatric cases.

The experience between Le Bonheur and St. Jude is very broad. Training varies from the more fundamental aspects of Pediatric Otolaryngology to advanced management of pediatric airway issues, congenital anomalies, head and neck cancer, pediatric facial trauma, and sinonasal disorders.

Baptist / Regional One Health

This chief level rotation occurs in a suburban hospital setting. The resident works primarily with Dr. Courtney Shires. However, there is ample opportunity to work not only with additional clinical faculty members such as Dr. Chris Hall and Dr. Blake Williams but also with a variety of community Otolaryngologists and Plastic Surgeons in private practice. Additionally, the Baptist resident also operates at Regional One Health two half-days each week to assist the junior resident on the general ENT service at Regional One Health with more advanced cases.

This is a dedicated rotation for senior residents covering both adult and pediatric Neurotology under the direction of Dr. Bruce MacDonald. The Otology resident spends time with Dr. MacDonald in his clinic and in the operating room at Le Bonheur, Baptist, and Methodist.
